You can't wax because the laser won't see the hair follicle. You have got to shave and then use it on a clean, oil free skin.
By the way, I tested to see what happens if you don't bother shaving at all, and I don't recommend it. It burns the hair and stings a lot. My recommendation is don't be lazy shave and laser right away :-)

Don't wax because you rip the roots of the hair out by waxing. You want to shave and that way the roots get killed with the treatment.

Do not wax! Waxing will pull the hair out by the root and the existing root in the hair folicle is what attracts the light from the hair removal system. Shaving is recommended. if hair is longer and lays on the skin, the darkness of the hair attracts the laser light to the skin rather than the hair folicle. Not only is this a waste of time it may damage your skin. It doesnt sound like this product is strong enough to damage your skin but better to not take chances.

I used it on my bikini area and it works awesome on coarse dark hair. Just make sure your bikini area is not sweaty and the hair is shaved off very well otherwise you will feel more of a zap during treatment.

I have had my unit for 1 1/2 years, still going strong. This is not cordless so there is no charge time. Never used TRIA so can't compare. The SensEpil does have a pretty long cord. I have personally gone through a LOT of cartridges and still have quite a bit of hair to remove. It has become pretty expensive.

It plugs in & didn't need to charge. The first 50 pulses of the 750 pulses before you change cartridges is at setting 3 and then after that you can go up to 4-5. Its pre-set to keep you at 3 for the first 50 charges ,so I have used mine still under 50 pulses for about 4-5 sessions and have had excellent results under arms and bikini areas.

It is permanent. You need about 8 treatments or so. The darker your hair the better it works.

The only method of permanent hair removal is electrolysis. Laser light based hair removal used at the Dermatologist office will reduce the amount of hair you have and will also thin the hair shaft. I've not used this product so I dont know the effectiveness, but before I purchased I would be interested in finding out how many treatments you can get per cartridge.

Question

How many cartridges do you need?

I see that it comes with one cartridge, but I'm thinking about buying it for my legs. If I need to buy multiple cartridges before I start seeing results, it's going to get too expensive. 750 pulses doesn't really mean anything to me, so realistically, how much is this going to cost?

It treats a 2 cm x 3 cm area with each flash. You can grid your leg with white eyeliner to get a rough idea how many flashes you will need per treatment. It will take about 8 treatments to eliminate most if not all of your leg hairs. The first 4 treatments are done 2 weeks apart, the subsequent ones are a month apart.

I'm kind of a new user as I've only used it for three sessions now on my legs, but so far I'm still on the same cartridge it came with. I've estimated that it takes about 50 pulses for each of my lower legs, and after just 3 sessions I've seen some pretty dramatic results. However, I do have the ideal hair type for it, so you might see something different. Hope this helps!

Once a cartridge is completely used up (after 750 or so flashes) the machine won't work until you put a new cartridge in.

Yes, when the one the machine comes with runs out. If I remember correctly each cartridge provides 750 light pulses. The booklet gives you an approximation of how many body parts that covers. Also, the machine's replacement light will turn on when you have 10% left. That's pretty much your queue to order another one. When it runs out the machine will not give off any pulses.

Not really. This is perfect for people with dark hair and fair skin, like me.

The darker the hair the better the results, so people who are tanned but have dark hair may see results, it might just take a few more treatments and sting a little more than people with fair skin. I have a birthmark and it stings on that spot, but the rest of the body is like a gentle snap from a rubber band or a little heat, but nothing painful and definitely not comparable to the pain you experience from waxing. In fact I can't imagine waxing ever in my life again, this treatment is faster and pain free compared to waxing.

I bought this machine 2 years ago and after 4 treatments my hair was totally gone for 18 months! When it did grow back, it came back in patches and the hair was much lighter, you could barely notice the hair. For me this is a miracle, my hair used to be extremely thick and dark it was embarrassing, and waxing was the only option for me, even though it was expensive and inconvenient.

My hair growth was so minimal after 18 months, that I didn't bother with another treatment for a whole year, but after shaving every now and again I began to notice the hair coming in more and growing a little darker again, so I started up my first treatment again last night.

It does not work on fair hair or light skin. The machine will not emit a pulse unless your hair is dark enough and your skin can't be too light or too dark.

This will not work on fair or light hair. It works on dark hair on medium skin tone. I have this and it works on my brown hair, not the grey. Will not work on my daughter who has light brown hair and fair skin.

Question

Will this work on red hair? How about blonde-red hair?

This is for the Silk'n SensEpil Hair Removal Device. I will definitely buy it if it will work on fairly light hair with a red tint to it. If not, is it possible to dye the hair black (dark) and then use this product? Thank you for your information.

Since it works on pigmented hair, the more pigment it has the better it works. I have read that people got ok results with lighter hair as well, but needed to treat more times.

It works on dark hair on medium tone skin. It won't work on fair skin either. I have a feeling that with your hair color you may be fair skinned. This is what happens when you try to use the machine on light hair or skin - instead of the pulse, you get audible multiple beeps and there is a light on the main unit that flashes. The unit will not discharge a pulse when this happens. I don't know about dying the hair and then using it.
